BIRDWATCHING One does not need to be a dedicated bird watcher to appreciate the many species of birds that are present in the valley. Ask at the reception for a list of birds seen in the Ali Shungu gardens and the surrounding area. |
CHURCHES As in any Latin American town, the churches certainly merit a visit. Quechua mass on Sunday is worth seeing whether you are the religious type or not. |
HORSEBACK RIDING Several agencies and individuals in town offer a good opportunity for safe and exciting exursions through Andean mountain trails. We also have great horses at the Ali Shungu Rancho! |
BAND MUSIC IN THE PARK Almost every Sunday morning at about 10:00 the city band gathers its tubas and trombones in the center park and plays "musica nacional" for about an hour. Excellent for casual strolling and socializing. |
PEŅAS AND FOLKLORE MUSIC Rubbing shoulders with the locals. Absolutely live indigenous music with pan pipes and haunting melodies right here at Ali Shungu most every Friday night. There are quite a few places in town for music and dancing on the weekends. See a Music Video |
MUNICIPAL BUILDING From the main square wander through the labyrinth of the city government building. Restoration is still in progress. Lovely! |

DOWNHILL BICYCLING Rent a bike at Ali Shungu and be dropped off by car or pickup 32 kms. up on roads with little traffic and spend a few hours riding down. Surrounded by volcanos, the panoramic vistas are spectacular! Pack a picnic lunch and don't forget to take a sweater. See a Video |

COCKFIGHTS Okay, admit you are curious! Cockfighting is very much a part of this culture. Every Saturday evening near the food market. Not for everyone. For strictly anthropological observation........ |
