THE SACRED STONE

At the base of Taita Imbabura sits a giant boulder said to have been heaved during a might competition between the two volcanoes.  20 acres of pre Incan walls and placed stones nearby will make you feel like an explorer of lost cities!

ANTHROPOLOGY INSTITUTE OF OTAVALO

Located just a ten minute walk from Hotel Ali Shungu, the Institute, the home of the new University of Otavalo, offers an extensive collection of literature about the area and a stunning display of dolls re-enacting Indigenous cultural activities.

"EL OBRAJE" MUSEUM OF WEAVING AND

AGRICULTURE

Don Luis Maldonado and his wife, LuzMaria, have been at the very core of the weaving community for over 55 years.  They are dedicated to preserving the tools and materials of the Otavalo culture.  Located a block away from the main plaza in Otavalo.

Admission is $2.00 per person. See a Video

TRAIN TO LITA

Half day excursions are offered from Ibarra to the city of Lita, entrance to the western jungle.  The round trip starts early in the morning from Ibarra and costs a few dollars.  Sit on top of the old "school bus"  that rests on a train chassis and hold on!                                    See a Video

EL MOLINO

Visit the naturally powered millhouse located near the center of Otavalo.  The mill is still used on a regular basis by country folk.  Lots of atmosphere!

SULFUR SPRINGS

On the back road to Cotacachi several pools of warm and very sulfuric water are known as the Fuente de Salud.  A bit rustic, but a very pleasant walk!.

Would you rather stay outside of but close to Otavalo?
