Do we have to share a guesthouse with other guests?

No, whether you are 1 guest or a family of five, the price per night is for a guesthouse.

How can we pay?

We accept cash and travelers checks. We charge 2% to change travelers checks. We accept credit cards, but only through Paypal. We have an internet connection here at the Lodge, so you may pay with your credit card over the internet using Paypal.

How far are we from Otavalo?

We are about 3 miles from Otavalo. The beautiful walk to Otavalo follows a quiet cobblestone road and is easy…….it is all downhill.

How can we get to and from Otavalo?

The Ali Shungu Land Cruiser drives down to Otavalo each morning between 8:00-9:00 am and returns each afternoon between 2:00-3:00 pm. Guests are welcomed to drive down with us at these times! Local buses pass by three times a day to and from Yambiro, not very convenient. Otherwise, a taxi costs only $4.00 each way and we can easily have a taxi here at the Lodge within 10-15 minutes.

Is there any danger of robberies?

This area located on the outskirts of Otavalo is very safe! The people of these small rural communities live a simple life and are very friendly. Of course, on Saturday in the Otavalo market, one must be aware of the pickpockets! In years past, travelers have reported robberies at the Lagunas. Police report that these are usually setups, a guide or a driver involved.

Can we stay one night?

At this time we have a two night minimum at the Ali Shungu Lodge. Really, what is the point of showing up late in the afternoon and leaving early the next morning?!

What do we do for food?

The Ali Shungu Mountaintop Lodge Restaurant offers an excellent selection of gourmet vegetarian dishes and many choices of quality meats. Do you have a special diet? We'll do our best to accommodate your needs. The cost per night at the Lodge includes a full breakfast and a full three course dinner. If you wish to stay all day here at the Lodge, let us know and we'll be glad to prepare a lunch for you. And, of course, each guesthouse has a small kitchen for preparing drinks, snacks etc.

What kind of clothing do we need?

Think in terms of layers when traveling anywhere in the Sierra of Ecuador. For the Lodge, here on top of our mountain, bring a sweater just in case it gets chilly and good walking shoes or boots would be helpful!
